Discovery has a new special called When We Left Earth coming next month that features hours of historical NASA footage remastered in HD. After seeing In The Shadow Of The Moon in HD (Ron Howard’s documentary that also featured mostly restored footage) my expectations are high. 16mm film looks amazing properly restored at high resolution, and it’s something we don’t see very much of. In Howard’s movie it felt like someone had gone back in time to reshoot all the historical footage with modern technology; it unlocked depth and clarity that had been hidden in time and the result was much more cinematic and emotionally engaging. It left me wanting more, so I hope Discovery delivers.
By the way, here’s a piece of advice to anyone promoting a feature whose main draw is the fact that it’s in HD: post the trailer in HD. It’s 2008, guys; if your grandma can post 720p video I’m sure a major cable network can figure it out. Further challenge to NASA: post all this remastered footage online for free, it belongs to the public anyway. If you need help creating a Vimeo account give me a call.
I would love to see an HD CGI story attempting to explain all the myth in Astrology.
