So I’ve watched “Life After People” (a pretty wonderful beginning that eventually slides into a lot of bad poetry and other transparently manipulative tactics— the first third is kinda worth a watch, though) and “Aftermath: Population Zero” (total crap) and now ABC is stepping into the ring with “Earth 2001.” Are there really people in the country right now who believe both that A) we’re in real danger of extinguishing our species and B) we can trust what a major television network tells us we can do to avoid it? It seems like you’d have to have a knuckle for a head for those beliefs to co-exist side-by-side in there.
It’s fascinating (but not necessarily surprising) to me how quickly the mainstream has caught on to/appropriated apocalypse culture. It really is quite a handy for just about everybody though— some old school fatalism coming to the rescue of lazy bastards everywhere. Young people don’t have to think about growing up (or anything else unpleasant, for that matter) since we’re all pretty much doomed lol, and old people don’t have to sweat changing the specifics of their lifestyles because it’s obviously an endemic problem far beyond the influence of the actions of mere individuals…
I use this rule of thumb: anybody who tries to talk to you about apocalypse (or related concepts) but doesn’t personally know how to kill and cook some animals, how to grow and identify nutritious plants, or how to maintain a clear head without medication is not actually very serious about the subject. I’m probably going to d/l this “Earth 2001” program but I swear to God it goes into the recycle bin the minute somebody with plastic surgery appears on screen.
